Sickness benefit insurance in brief

Daily sickness allowance insurance is a private supplementary insurance policy that serves as a form of private provision to compensate for the loss of income during extended periods of illness. This ensures not only your financial security but also your standard of living.

Sickness benefit insurance can be taken out by various employed persons, including employees who are covered by statutory or private health insurance, freelancers and self-employed persons.

The benefits of this insurance are activated if you are unable to work for an extended period due to illness. This also applies to the statutory maternity leave period. Sickness benefits are paid until you are able to return to work or become occupationally disabled. There is no limit to the duration of benefits in the event of illness.

You can individually determine the amount of your daily sickness allowance and adjust it to your current net income. You have the flexibility to choose the daily rate in increments of five euros.

Why is daily sickness allowance insurance necessary?

Income gaps and loss of earnings due to incapacity for work are the main reasons why you should think about securing your income early on, regardless of whether you are employed or self-employed.

For employees:

Employees typically receive six weeks of continued salary payment in the event of incapacity for work (wage replacement benefit). After this period, an income gap may arise, which can be bridged with daily sickness allowance insurance starting in the seventh week. The specific situation depends on the type of health insurance (statutory or private).

For self-employed individuals:
Self-employed individuals experience a direct loss of income during periods of incapacity for work or statutory maternity leave, as they do not receive continued salary payments. Therefore, daily sickness allowance insurance is essential for the self-employed.

It is important to note that daily sickness allowance should not be confused with sick pay. Sick pay is paid by statutory health insurance (GKV) if the incapacity for work lasts longer than six weeks. Sick pay is often insufficient to compensate for lost income, especially for high earners. Therefore, private supplementary insurance in the form of daily sickness allowance is essential for those with private health insurance (employed or self-employed).
