Statutory health insurance (GKV) covers only services that fall within the prescribed limits of what is necessary, as defined in the Social Code. This may seem complicated at first glance, and indeed it is. If you, as a publicly insured patient, find that these limited services are insufficient, you are forced to pay for additional services out of your own pocket.

Private supplemental health insurance, on the other hand, covers costs and services that are either not covered at all by statutory health insurance or only partially covered. For example, if you want comprehensive coverage for dental treatments, you should consider supplemental dental insurance.
