Could basic disability insurance be a
Could this be an alternative to disability insurance?

Disability insurance is not only difficult to obtain, but it can also be very expensive depending on individual circumstances. Basic skills insurance is often considered an alternative to disability insurance to protect one's earning capacity. This type of insurance also pays a pension in the event of the loss of physical or mental abilities, such as hearing, speech, or sight. But is basic skills insurance truly an adequate alternative to disability insurance?

What is meant by a basic disability insurance policy?

Sight, speech, hearing, walking… the loss of such fundamental abilities has far-reaching consequences – including financial ones. The office clerk who loses her hearing in both ears, or the gardener who can no longer walk; both will most likely have to give up their jobs. And with them, their financial security.

A basic disability insurance policy protects physical or mental abilities.. If you lose one of these insured basic abilities, the insurer will pay the agreed pension.

Exactly which abilities are covered depends on the policy terms and can be found in the so-called abilities catalog. Insurance companies differentiate between the following: basic abilities such as hearing and seeing as well as specific activities (Reading, writing). A skills catalog could look like this:

Elemental abilities:

  • Speak
  • See
  • Hear
  • Go
  • Food/Drink
  • Stand
  • Grab
  • Hold
  • Use of hand
  • Kneeling and bending
  • Maintaining balance

Specific tasks

  • To read
  • Write
  • Ride a bike
  • Tap
  • Operating telephone/computer
  • preparing food

At what point in time does an entitlement to benefits arise?

Insured persons are entitled to the agreed pension if they possess one of the insured abilities.  completely and likely permanently have lost out. For example, someone who is temporarily unable to walk due to a broken leg receives no benefits, as this condition is not permanent. However, in the case of a permanent disability of a leg, there is an entitlement to benefits if no improvement is expected.

Most insurance companies generally assume that the affected ability is likely to be impaired.  at least six to twelve months.

  • Unlike disability insurance, basic skills insurance covers the loss of a basic ability. It doesn't matter whether this results in a loss of earning capacity.

Beware of performance definitions

One disadvantage of basic disability insurance is that the conditions for receiving benefits are defined relatively precisely. Insured individuals only receive their pension if their impairment meets the respective definition. For example:

  • The policyholder is unable to stand for more than ten minutes.
  • The policyholder can only see a maximum of five percent.

Furthermore, a prerequisite may be that the customer must lose several abilities in order to be entitled to benefits. In that case, it is not sufficient, for example, if the ability to use a particular tool is no longer sufficient.  I strongly advise against such tariffs!  I'm happy to help you find the right protection. Mental health conditions are only partially covered by insurance.

More and more people are unable to work due to mental health issues and consequently lose their financial security. When considering basic disability insurance, it's important to note that mental health is a factor.  only limited insurance coverage Burnout, depression, or panic attacks do not usually lead to a claim against basic disability insurance.

  • Some tariffs do provide coverage for serious mental illnesses such as severe depression or schizophrenia.

The loss of mental abilities, such as... is insured.  Concentration and memory. However, insurers require that the customer is no longer able to perform everyday tasks. These include scheduling and keeping appointments, managing the household, and preparing meals. The decisive factor is the extent to which this limitation impacts the insured's life. Mild forgetfulness or absentmindedness is often not considered equivalent to a loss of ability.

Does basic disability insurance represent an alternative to occupational disability insurance?

I cannot generally recommend basic disability insurance as an alternative to occupational disability insurance.. Because disability insurance offers more comprehensive coverage. Those who are unable to work due to illness or accident, but have not lost any of their basic abilities, do not receive a pension. Disability insurance, on the other hand, provides coverage if the loss of abilities, as well as illness, mental health issues, or an accident, leads to a loss of earning capacity.

However, there is one exception: If you cannot get disability insurance or cannot afford it, basic disability insurance can be used as an alternative. In this case, having basic disability insurance is better than foregoing insurance coverage altogether!

Disability insurance is always the smarter choice.

One Occupational disability It offers more comprehensive protection. It covers far more risks than basic disability insurance, and often earlier. For example, benefits are payable if the insured becomes unable to work due to burnout. Basic disability insurance only pays out in cases of severe depression – and even then, not with every policy. Or the loss of an eye, which doesn't necessarily mean complete loss of sight, but leads to occupational disability in many professions.

For disability insurance, the only decisive factor is that the Ability to perform the current job, at least 50 percent is lost.

Disability insurance should always be your first choice. If you can't afford it or are denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions, basic disability insurance is an alternative.

What you should pay attention to when taking out a basic disability insurance policy

Before signing a contract, you should carefully review the terms of the basic disability insurance policy. Details are crucial to ensuring adequate coverage. I'm happy to assist you with this.

The following aspects should be considered:

  • Amount of pension benefit

Your pension benefits must be high enough to cover your living expenses. The loss of basic abilities often leads to occupational disability. Therefore, you should base your pension amount on your net income. I advise you to insure at least 80 percent, but ideally 100 percent, of your net salary.

  • Performance period

The benefit period defines how long the insurer will pay the pension once the benefit period begins. This should last at least until your regular retirement age; for most, that's age 67. If the benefit period is shorter, you risk a gap in your pension.

  • Definition of basic skills

It is important to pay attention to which basic abilities are insured and how the insurer defines the loss of these abilities. The more comprehensive the definitions, the more difficult it is to meet the requirements for receiving pension benefits.

  • Co-insurance of important skills for your profession

You should carefully consider which skills, in addition to basic abilities (seeing, hearing, etc.), are relevant to performing your job. These could include typing, computer use, but also standing or kneeling. Make sure these skills are covered in your policy, as their loss can very likely lead to occupational disability and thus to the loss of your financial security.

  • Minimum duration for loss of ability (forecast period)

The minimum duration defines how long the loss of ability must be expected to last in order to receive benefits. The shorter the so-called prognosis period, the more advantageous it is for you. Some insurers allow up to 12 months, others only six months. I recommend a policy that includes a six-month prognosis period.
